STUDENTS from Hereford have been to one of the world’s highest lakes and a school with close links to their own.

Gap-year students and teachers from Hereford Cathedral School (HCS) became the eighth group to visit Nepal since a link with village school Shree Sharada was set up 10 years ago.

HCS pays the salaries of two key teachers at the school and have helped transform it from a struggling primary to a successful secondary school.

The school, in the village of Ghachok in the Annapurna region, has also recently secured government funding to build additional classrooms and offices.

Mike Moffatt, chairman of HCS’s Ghachok link committee, said the group trekked to Lake Tilicho.

“The group this year saw the Great Barrier Ridge made famous by Maurice Herzog in his book about his epic ascent of Annapurna I,” he said.

“In addition to this, and due to the clear conditions experienced at 5,500 metres, views of Dhaulagiri and the three high mountains of Nilgari were also seen.”
