DONALD and Audrey Green of Mill Green, Knighton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family party at their home in Knighton. The couple now in their eighties met when they were 16 years old at The Abbey Fellowship Youth Club in St Albans. Donald went on to go to Cambridge University to do his teacher training and then he did his National Service for two years. They then got married in St Albans Abbey on July 9, 1954. Donald worked as a teacher and then a teacher training lecturer. They had three children two sons and a daughter and when the children were older Audrey worked as a manager of several citizens advice bureaus in the Midlands. When Donald was in his 50s he was ordained and became a vicar in Dudley. The couple moved to Knighton after they retired about twenty years ago but had been regular visitors to the town for the last thirty years. When in Knighton Donald regularly took services at St Edward's church and this continued until recently. Their house in Mill Green has been the venue for several family parties including their daughter Lizzie's 21st birthday and wedding party after she was married in St Edward's church by her father. The house situated right on the banks of the river Teme was flooded badly on two occasions and over the years and the couple got used to moving things upstairs when there were flood warnings. This has got better during the last few years because their house is in Shropshire and they had a grant from the council for flood prevention. At their anniversary party in their garden that is half in England and half in Wales they were joined by their three children, five grandchildren and other family members.
