THE last wicket has fallen at Shobdon Cricket Club - just 19 years after Graeme Hick and Steve Rhodes helped celebrate their biggest day. Former first-team skipper Chris ‘Stig’ Ammonds and Matt Teale instigated the final run-out as Shobdon bowed out on a winning note last Sunday. Matt Teale, whose dad Terry is the club chairman, said the field could be ploughed up next week. “Ten years ago we were thriving and, in 1994, Worcestershire played at Shobdon to mark the opening of our pavilion,” said Matt. “The likes of Graeme Hick, David Leatherdale and Steve Rhodes played for Worcestershire and it was a great day. “But the writing has been on the wall for the past two or three seasons.” Chris Ammonds said the club had little option but to fold after an appeal for help, through the village newsletter, fell on deaf ears. He said: “We signed off with a win against Chaldon Cricket Club and we managed to get Matt and Andy Teale out of retirement. “It was great to play a game at Shobdon with my six-year-old lad, Freddie. We will now have to decide what we do with the equipment but we hope it can go to other local cricket or sporting clubs. We’d then like to make a donation to the local school or another organisation that may benefit.” Shobdon resigned from the GB Liners Marches League in April but reached the semi-final of the Woodstock South Shropshire Twenty20 League. Matt Teale thanked the Corbett family for their support and said it was nice to be involved in the last-ever wicket at the ground. He added: “It was an emotional day on Sunday - we raised a glass and then locked the door.”
