Bromyard women set to scrum down

3:22pm Thursday 17th July 2008

A NORTH Herefordshire rugby club want women with an appetite for rugby.

Bromyard Rugby Club have started a women’s team who hope to join a league in 2009.

The driving force behind the team is Fi Ruthwell.

She says the Bromyard ladies are enjoying learning the basics of the sport.

“We have started off with about 10 ladies but we need to boost those numbers and we would like to get around 20 to training,” she said.

“We are having a lot of fun and learning all areas of the game. We are just starting to learn about tackling.”

Training sessions are being taken by Simon Lloyd.

The sessions are being held on Tuesdays at Bromyard Rugby Club from 7pm.

However, the ladies’ training evening could be switched to Wednesdays at the beginning of August.

Ruthwell said: “We would welcome ladies of any standard to come along to join us.

“But for legal reasons, should we join a league next year, players must be 18 or over.”

Ruthwell added: “Perhaps there are ladies who have played for other clubs in the past and would now like to get back into it. We would also like ladies with an appetite for rugby and who would simply like to have a go.

“I used to watch a lot of rugby at Bromyard and I thought it would be fun to start a ladies’ team.”

The ladies plan to train for the first year.

They then intend to start playing tag rugby and friendly matches before graduating to league fixtures.

More information about the team is available by telephoning Fi Ruthwell on 07779 486907.
