IN the Belmont Golf Club Championship, played over 36 holes, the resounding winner was Matthew Tweddell.
Carding an excellent three under par first round of 69, he followed up with par 72 for a gross total of 141 to finish a massive 14 strokes clear of the field.
The runner-up, with rounds of 77 and 78, was Richard Lloyd for his overall 155.
The Acorn Trophy for best nett scores fell into the grip of Justin Hughes with returns of 91-19-72 and 87-19-68 for an overall 140.
Ultimately three nett strokes ahead of runner-up James Pritchard, Hughes overturned a first-round advantage of the same size for Pritchard whose scores were 77-8-69, and 82-8-74 for 143.
In the First Day Medal, the convincing winner was 19-handicapper Colin Kerfoot with an excellent nett 64.
Second was Paul Preedy with 88-16-72, while one stroke further back in third place was Derrick Hancock (81-8-73).
Kerfoot’s commanding form held up for the Second Day Medal, enabling him to run out a double winner with an identical card of 83-19-64.
He did not have it all his own way this time, however, because Nick Hemmings’ return of 82-16-66 was two adrift. Third place was garnered by Andrew Main with 85-17-68.
In the Seniors Section, the E Mayers Trophy was won by Mike Ingram with 80-10-70. In second place was Wref Digings with 85-14-71, and third Geoff Foster (83-11-72).
Digings went one better with a comfortable victory total of 41 points in the Seniors Stableford. Alan May was second with 36 points, and Terry Wood third on 34.
q It was the closest of affairs at Cradoc’s Annual Jubilee Cup. Pat Jones emerged as champion, but only after a countback from two other players.
His gross of 84 off 13 for a nett 71 was exactly matched by Mark Ryland ahead of Chris Connolly with 82-11-71.
At a time when other courses in the area, beset by the bad weather, were closed altogether, Cradoc stood up well to the downpours.
The Mid Week Medal was held, albeit with a restricted field, and the winner was Tim Nelson who managed an excellent effort of 79-8-71 against the day’s standard scratch score of 72.
One of the course casualties was The Grove near Porthcawl where The Cradoc Seniors A Team were due to play their South Wales Seniors Classic Cup semi final against Milford Haven. This has now been re-scheduled.
The latest in the Seniors schedule of friendly matches resulted in a narrow home defeat against Herefordshire GC by 5 matches to 3.
Cradoc’s winning pairs were Seniors Captain Colin Rosser and Jack Massey by 3 and 2 and Chris Openshaw & Ron Jones (2 and 1). Halves were achieved by Gerry Morter and John Silk and John Roberts and John Nancarrow.
Two of the four lost foursomes went to the 17th green.
q Terry Morgan was triumphant in the Leominster Ben Novus Trophy for 0-14 Handicappers. Playing off 13, he recorded a gross 81 for nett 68.
James Morgan secured the runners-up spot on a countback with 81-12-69 from Dan Davies on 82-13-69.
A countback was also necessary in The Clifford Williams Competition for their 15 to 28 counterparts.
Malcolm Davies (87-19-68) was the victor, overcoming Sam Morris (88-20-68), with Martin Powell finishing third on 95-26-69.
q At Ravens’ Causeway, Herefordshire Seniors Stableford went the way of David Halpern with a fine score of 42 points. Bren Standell was second on 36 points, followed by Jim Smith on 35 and Ian McIntosh on 34.
Before their 5 matches to 3 victory at Cradoc, Herefordshire Seniors shared the spoils with a 4-4 draw at the home of their Kington counterparts.
q At Kington’s Bradnor Hill, Ross Moore continued in his rich vein of form to capture the August medal with a score of 72-5-67.
Robert Pritchard took the Division 1 title with 79-7-72. Matt Kidd won Division 2 with 90-15-75, and Mike Davies was the winner of Division 3 with 90-18-72.
Raymond Evans was the overall winner in the latest Wednesday Night Contest with a return of 39 points.
Ross Moore featured again by winning Division 1 with 34 points, while Frank Burke triumphed in Division 2 with 35 points, and Tracey Sandford topped Division 3 with 36 points.
The Sunday Morning Medal was won by Marcel Veillet with 86-18-68. Again, Ross Moore carried all before him in Division 1 with 73-5-68.
Gareth Jones led the way in Division 2 (85-15-70) and Ken Hill topped Division 3 with 89-17-72.
Kington captain Stan Arnold appeared at the top of the list in the results from the annual exchange between Kington and Tredegar Park Golf Club patnering Wyndham Evans to provide the winning score of 44 points.
Ray Evans and Alfie Roberts shot 43 points for second place, while Mike Richards and Tracey Sandford were in third place with 41 points. Mel Hughes and Tom Moorhouse were fourth with 40 points.
The Seniors August Medal saw Keith Douglas at the top of Division 1 with 89-18-71, Ron Davies-Jones in second place (84-10-74) and Dave Weston third with 93-19-74.
In Division 2 Ken Canton scored 100-24-76 for first place, George Farr in second place (107-27-80) and Dave Mains third with 109-28-81.
