A SARNESFIELD student has been celebrating after striking gold at the Aviva Welsh Schools track & Field Championships in Cardiff.

Fourteen-year-old Will Bright, a pupil at Christ College, Brecon, won the junior boys hammer competition despite having only taken up throwing the hammer since half-term.

“I trained for a few days before the Powys championships and won that,” said Bright, who is coached at Brecon by his housemaster, the former Ireland rugby international Gary Halpin.

“Then I trained for a few more days last week before the Welsh championships.”

The young athlete won at the Cardiff International Stadium with a throw of 34.04m, taking the title by a margin of more than six metres from the second-placed thrower.
