A GENEROUS parent who won a garden shredder in a competition is helping hundreds of Kington pupils go green after donating it to her child’s school.
Eardisley resident Debbie Smith kindly gave her Bosch AXT RAPID to Lady Hawkins’ School, where her son is a Year 10 student, when she struck lucky in a Herefordshire Council competition during Compost Awareness Week.
Lady Hawkins geography teacher David Smith said: “We are always grateful for donations and the shredder will be a great benefit to us because we have a lot of trees in the grounds which need regular trimming and the mulch will be good for putting on our flower-beds.”
Compost generated by the shredder will also boost school meals by growing vegetables on site - which are already being used in its canteen - and improve pupils’ understanding of sustainability during lessons in a forthcoming eco-classroom.
Council project development officer for compost Viktoria Salisbury said: “The really nice thing with this example is that Mrs Smith has kindly donated her prize to the Lady Hawkins School, meaning that they can compost more effectively on site and also that the children can learn even more about composting."
