County bull tops sale

A Herefordshire-bred bull topped the sale when Hereford Cattle Society held its Spring Show and Sale in Hereford Market.

The top call of 5,000gns came for the reserve male champion, the 22-month Greenyards 1 Caesar, from Phil and Alison Allman, of Marden.

Caesar, scaling 852kgs, a double cross of two Royal Show champions, Onondaga Pure Gold and Broatch 1 June, bought by Sarah Soanes of Kiplingcotes Herefords, Market Weighton, East Yorkshire.

Following close behind was a first prize-winner, two year old Kinglee 1 Comet, bred and exhibited by Peter Cobley, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. Comet, scaling 1,016 kgs, was sold for 4,600 gns to Andrew Thomas, New Breach Herefords, Cowbridge, Glamorgan.

The male champion in the show was the 17 months Bosa 1 Dabinate. Again Herefordshire-bred and scaling 714 kgs it came from Gerald Blandford and Son's Bosa herd at Bosbury. It sold for 2,600 gns to D D Rowley and Partners of Swadlincote, Derbyshire.

The two youngest bulls sold in the sale were both bred and exhibited by Anthony and Adam Spooner of Leek - 16-month-old Dieulacresse Dugald, at 740 kgs and a second prizewinner to the champion sold for 3,600 gns to Edward Lewis of Haven Herefords, and James Lewis, Boycefield Herefords, Dilwyn. The second bull, also 16 months, was Dieulacresse Debonair. Scaling 696 kgs it sold for a 2,000 gns bid from R Goodwin and Son, Honeybrook Herefords, Ivington, Leominster.

Other leading prices included: Broadfield Conker, weighing 862 kgs. at 24 months, bred and exhibited by Mrs P M Jones of Kinnersley selling for 2,200 gns to John and Melanie Williams, Anhay Herefords, Cornwall; Cleland 1 Cosmo, weighing 924 kgs. at 24 months, bred and exhibited by A E Nesbitt Farms Ltd, Hungerford, selling for 2,000 gns to Warham Court Farms, Breinton and Spinney Dallas, weighing 830 kgs at 18 months, bred and exhibited by Richard Mann, Leamington Spa, selling for 1,700 gns. to Dent Farms Ltd., Withington Herefords, Withington.

The female trade continues to remain strong with the 19 show heifers selling to a top of 2,900 gns and averaging £1,821.00. G Blandford and Son sold the second highest price heifer, 23 month old Bosa 1 Thuya 429, for 2,800 gns to P Murphy of Staffordshire.

The trade continued to remain buoyant for the non-show section. Auctioneers: Brightwells.
