SINGER and celebrity DJ Boy George says that he is looking forward to seeing how much Hereford has changed when he returns to the city tonight.

The charismatic DJ, who was one of the biggest music stars in the 1980s, will be performing a one-and- a-half-hour set at Fusion.

“The last time I came to Hereford was about 12 years ago, so I will be interested to see what it is like now,” said Boy George, whose real name is George O’Dowd.

“In the 1990s and up until about 10 years ago, there were a lot of happy small clubs in the UK and Hereford was one of those happy places.

“These days, you mainly travel abroad and most DJs play outside of the UK, so to DJ in the UK is quite rare.”

George, famous as the lead singer with Culture Club, and with huge hits such as Do You Really Want To Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon, under his belt, started DJing in 1987.

He said that he will be sticking to his roots and will play soulful house music.

“House music and dance is as big as it’s ever been because it’s commercial now,” said George.

“I play soulful house music, and it is very popular.

"Sticking to what you do best seems to be the best policy.”

Speaking after recent pictures emerged of him looking in much better shape, Boy George said that he is in a very positive place nowadays.

“The size of my bum was trending at one time, but I have made a lot of lifestyle changes over the last couple of years – it hasn’t happened overnight,” he said.

“I eat very healthily and eat a lot, but it is what I eat.

Boy George will be supported on the night by his manager Marc Vedo.

The 33-year-old Bristolian, who co-owns VG Records with George, was a regular resident DJ during the Naughty but Nice nights at the former Crystal Rooms in the 1990s and says he cannot wait to come back to his “old stomping ground.”

"Every time I play in Hereford, I get a good crowd turn up and hopefully with George being booked, it will be an amazing night.”
