HEREFORD’S most popular modern buildings have been revealed after a public vote conducted by Hereford Civic Society.

The society recently asked residents to name the building or project they felt had contributed the most to city life. While there was no clear winner, six sites came out on top.

According to those who voted, the best buildings and projects of recent times in the city are:

  • The Left Bank on Bridge Street.
  • The Chained Library in Cathedral Close.
  • The Courtyard Centre for Arts on Edgar Street.
  • The Colleges Campus, featuring Herefordshire College of Technology and Hereford College of Arts, on Folly Lane.
  • All Saints Church café.
  • The £5m Cathedral Close refurbishment.

A total of 40 buildings from the past 60 years were nominated, from Franklin House on the corner of Commercial Street and the Victoria Eye Hospital flats in Eign Street to the pedestrianisation of Widemarsh Street, the colourful Hereford Academy in Marlbrook Road and the A49 Greyfriars Bridge.

All the nominated buildings feature in a Jubilee supplement published in the autumn edition of HCS’s free magazine.
