Deep into injury-time, Ross Lafayette pulls a goal back for Welling with a close range header.
Frankie Artus powers in a shot which Butcher is unable to hold and Michael Rankine drills in the rebound from a suspiciously offside position.
At the other end, Collins gets on the end of a Purdie corner but heads wide.
Welling go back on to the attack and Jake Gallagher’s fine run takes him to the bye-line with the cross running through Evans’ legs and along the goal-line before going behind for a goal-kick.
Hereford hit back with a good run from Smith which brings a corner.
Collins comes flying in to meet West’s cross but the ball goes over the bar.
Skipper Lee Clarke sends a header just over as the Wings continue to seek the equaliser.
Welling move back on to the attack and are awarded a corner by referee Simon Bennett although Evans does not appear to touch the ball.
The flag-kick brings a free-kick to Hereford.
But it’s the Bulls who take the lead four minutes into the half.
Sam Smith gets away on the left and his cross is fumbled by keeper Butcher with Sharp on hand to prod home.
Welling force an early corner at the start of the second half but Evans easily claims Obersteller’s flag-kick.
Hereford make the early running and West sends a scuffed shot just wide of a post.
West almost sneaks in when he outpaces the Welling defence in the third but can’t get any pace on his shot and it brings an easy save.
There’s an early booking for Rod McDonald and the free-kick almost brings a goal when Jack Obersteller’s curling drive is brilliantly tipped away by Rhys Evans.
Loick Pires makes a good run down the right for Welling but his pass fails to pick out a team-mate.
With Welling starting to make the running, Joe Healy’s shot is saved by Evans before the Bulls keeper tips a shot from Obersteller out for the first corner.
Hereford are struggling to get much of a grip on the game as Welling make most of the running.
Hereford force their first corner on 34 minutes but the ball is quickly cleared after momentary danger.
There’s a second corner for the Bulls on 38 minutes but again West’s corner is cleared.
The third, moments later, is caught acrobatically by keeper Lee Butcher.
Welling are quickly on the attack again, though, and Loick Pires finds the space to turn in the area only to send his shot over the bar.
As half-time approaches, Fraser Franks swings a free-kick into the Hereford area and Evans appears to be impeded as he goes to gather. But the loose ball is eventually cleared by the United defence.
HEREFORD include loan signings Michael West and Paul Green for their Edgar Street debuts when the Bulls take on Welling.
Boss Martin Foyle makes three changes with Green, Rob Purdie and Rod McDonald replacing Josh O’Keefe and Danny Leadbitter, who are injured, and Frankie Artus who drops to the bench.
