LUCTONIANS captain Alex Smith is not hitting the panic button yet despite his side’s precarious league position.

The Kingsland side have lost their last 10 games and are now just two points above the National League 2 North relegation zone.

But Smith is confident his troops will get it right and are good enough to stay in the division.

“I keep saying that we are performing well in games and are playing some good stuff, but results haven’t been good,” said Smith.

“There’s no one underlying thing that is going wrong, it’s just little things each week.

“But it is a long run of defeats and it puts more pressure on the boys.

“Each and every one of us are keen to win games and we’re begging to go over the line.

“I still have faith in the squad and the spirit is high and we’re still not in the relegation zone even after losing so many games.

“I’m still positive though and believe we will be fine.”

Smith took over the captain’s armband this season and he knew the job would be challenging.

“Im 29 and the eldest in the side, but that is still a young age when you've got a collection of 30 year olds against you,” said Smith.

“It is challenging at the moment, but the coaches work really hard in the week and I really can’t fault them.”

The skipper added that he can’t remember a league like it where so many teams are able to beat anyone on their day, which gives him hope.

“We’ve got 10 games to go to string some wins together and I believe we are capable of doing that,” said Smith.

“We lost at home to Chester and South Leicester before Christmas when we should have won.

"If we had won those games, I don't think we would have gone on this run.

“But we are under no illusions that we are in a relegation battle.”

Lucs host fifth-placed Sedgley Park this Saturday before an away encounter at Chester.

Their next game after that is against the leaders Caldy at Mortimer Park before they start March with an away game at second-from-bottom Preston Grasshoppers.

“I back us to beat any team,” added Smith.

“Sedgley Park are always a powerful bunch, but we’ve got to believe that we go and beat them.”

Lucs’ latest defeat was a 32-22 reverse at fellow strugglers Wharfedale.

Tom Barrett kicked 22 points for the Yorkshire side and Lucs were always up against it.

The home side opened up a 23-5 lead at half-time thanks to two conversions, two drop goals and a penalty from Barrett.

Josh Burridge and Harry Bullough also scored tries, with Louis Silver going over for Lucs.

But Smith’s team battled back after the break and scored a penalty try, converted by Johnny Morris, as well as a try from Smith following 28 phases in Wharfedale’s 22.

Another drop goal by Barrett extended Wharfedale’s lead before Joe White went over for Lucs.

Barrett then kicked over a late penalty.

“Whenever you outscore your opponents four tries to two, it’s a tough one to take,” added Smith.

“I felt we did some really good things, but we had too much to do in the second half and were playing against the elements.

“Maybe ill-discipline cost us."
