LEDBURY Rugby Club captain Rob Anscomb conceded his side were second best as their dreams of playing at Twickenham ended at Oundle.

The Ross Road side lost 61-33 to their Northamptonshire opponents in the Midlands Senior Vase final, meaning it will be Oundle who will now play West Leeds for the right to play at the home of rugby.

"We tried our best up there, but they are a really good side and were a level above us," said Anscomb.

"They deserve to be promoted and they more than deserved to win on the day.

"To be fair, we started well and got the first try, but it was our errors that cost us they were a lot quicker than us.

"But we kept going and fought until the end.

"It was a really good feeling after the game though and everyone held their head high and can be really proud of themselves."

Anscomb scored three of Ledbury's tries, with Harry Bee also touching down.

The Herefordshire side's other points were via the boot of George Bennion.

Ledbury are still in with a chance of promotion from Midlands 3 West (South), but Anscomb concedes it's a long shot.

"All we have to do is keep winning and hope other sides slip up," said Anscomb.

"Evesham have got 80 points and they look like they are home and dry and then you've got Southam who are second, Rugby Lions in third and us in fourth.

"We've got Rugby Lions on the last day, which could be massive, but Southam have also got Evesham, so we have a chance."
