HEREFORD Rugby Club have received a severe caution after their match against Walsall was abandoned last month following a "fracas".

The Wyesiders were leading 7-0 in the Midlands 1 West match when tempers flared eight minutes into the second half, which led to the referee abandoning the game.

Meetings have since been held with the the RFC and senior county union officials and it has been decided that both clubs be issued with warnings.

"We and Walsall spoke to various senior people at the RFY and the North Midlands and Staffordshire rugby unions and the conclusion was that the referee could have handled it a bit a bit differently," said Hereford secretary Malcolm Harris.

"Therefore, a warning was more suitable."

The match will now be played again on Easter Saturday, March 26.

Meanwhile, Hereford achieved their first double of the season when they beat Burton 17-6 last Saturday.

The Wyesiders were dominant in the first half, but had to survive a second half siege, when their well organised defence held out to take the points and to deny the visitors a losing bonus.

Hereford’s early attacks were frustrated by handling errors in the difficult conditions and it was Burton who opened the scoring with a penalty goal from Dave Archer.

The away side then increased their lead to six points when Archer kicked a second penalty.

But Hereford fought back and went in the lead when Dean Powell converted James Harris' try.

The Wyesiders continued to dominate and scored again through Lewis Jordan to take a 12-6 half-time lead.

A third try was scored after the break by Mark Philo following a scrum.
