THIS Sunday's Marches Sevens event at Wyeside is set to be one of the most competitive for years.

The arrival of Wellington College, arguably the most successful sevens school side in the country, will add spice to already high quality school list.

Wellington are the current National Schools champions and have consistently won other festivals across the county.

A total of 32 teams will battle for the cup, with Millfield defending their crown.

They will be joined by the likes of Barnard Castle, Sherborne, Llandovery College, Sir Thomas Rich's, Monmouth, Plymouth and Cheltenham College.

Hereford Cathedral School have been drawn alongside Pate's Grammar, Christ College Brecon and King Edward's, Bath in their group and the home team will be hoping for a similar level of success as last year when they progressed to the quarter-finals.

The first round of games start at 10.20am, with the finals scheduled for 5pm.

Meanwhile, organisers are intrigues to know what happened in the event in 1978 after it was missed off the league records.

“It is really strange because we have records for every other year including several years when the event had to be cancelled due to flooding,." said Hereford Cathedral School markating manager Sophie Corness.

"We were intrigued and searched through our old school magazines but there is no mention of it.

"We even asked a couple of our long-serving staff members to see if they know what happened and no one seems to have any idea.

“It would be interesting to hear from anyone who might remember.”
