BISHOP of Hereford's Bluecoat School have won the North Midlands Schools Cup after beating Monmouth 12-5 at Wyeside on Monday.

This is the fourth team Bishops have won the trophy, equalling Bromsgrove's record.

Bishop's went ahead thanks to a try from Rhys Proctor, which Bryn Goodall converted.

The city school could have gone further ahead when Ollie Davies' try was disallowed and had two or three other opportunities go begging.

But Bishop's did extend their lead in the second half when full-back Kieran Twigg went over to put his team 12-0 up.

The try was not converted, but Bishop's kept their opponents at bay thanks to some fantastic defensive work.

Monmouth did grab a try near the end of the game, but it was too little too late and it was Bishop's who saw their name on the trophy.

John Escott, who watched the game, some superb rugby was played.

"The scoreline probably flattered Monmouth," he said.

"About 300 people watched, who were very vocal, and it was a real physical battle."

Bishop's beat Bromsgrove in the semi-final thanks to a narrow 29-26 win.

The school's under-14s are also into the Midlands Under-14 States School Cup and will face Northampton School for Boys at Coventry's Butts Park Arena this Monday.

The team beat Prince Henry's High School from Evesham 19-5 in the semi-final.
