A HEREFORDSHIRE Motor Club took a class win on the fourth round of the MSA REISS National Asphalt Rally Championship.

Based on the MOD camp of Otterburn, a challenging 85 miles faced Darren and Sue Underwood who struggled to get into a rhythm on the opening loop of three stages, with wet conditions making the asphalt slippy in places.

However, an improvement over the next loop saw the couple climb up to second in the class.

Stages seven to nine used roads that the husband and wife team knew on only their fourth visit to the venue and with drying conditions, they knew they had to set some good times.

Although a noise from the differential did cause concern, luckily a remedy at service enabled them to continue their assault over what would be the final stages and, with no other issues, the pairing finished first in class and 23rd overall from an entry of 80 crews.

With just two rounds remaining, the Underwoods now lead their class in the championship standings, as well as the Millington Rear Wheel Drive category.

"It'll be tough to hold onto these positions," admitted Darren.

Overall, Darren is sitting in 10th position while Sue is sixth.

The next championship event sees the crews return to Epynt biliary ranges near Brecon on August 30.
