WESTFIELDS extended their unbeaten run to four games as they comfortably overcame Kirby Muxloe in a Midland Football League Premier Division clash.

Fields ran out 3-0 winners in a game which they controlled from start to finish with goals from Nathaniel Lewars, Marcus Palmer and Joel Edwards.

“First half was an especially good performance, we passed the ball well which is important for us," said manager Sean Edwards.

“Strikers win you matches, when you’ve got strikers you can win games.

“It proves today that when you’ve got strong players up front who can stretch teams it makes all the difference.”

The home side were quick out the blocks and asserted their dominance early on with striker Lewars coming close twice in the first 10 minutes.

On 14 minutes though Westfields did take the lead when a cross by Carl Morgan was brought down well by Lewars before he coolly finished into bottom corner.

Despite the home side's dominance, the visitors did have the ball in the back of the net two minutes later when Dan Sheahan’s volley was ruled out for offside.

On 37 minutes, Westfields increased their lead when on-loan Marcus Palmer was put through on goal after a defensive mix up and he also finished well.

Palmer could have had a second when he had an open goal to aim at after a Morgan cross found him in space, but he could only find the opposition keeper.

“We were really fast out of blocks today," said Edwards. "In the warm-up we were sloppy but it seems we have to tell them off before the game rather than at half-time," said Edwards.

“At half-time, I just asked them to be solid second half and keep a clean sheet which they did.”

Six minutes into the second half, Fields scored their third of the game when defender Joel Edwards was able to flick the ball past the keeper from five yards out after good work on the right from Lewars.

The hosts continued to create chances throughout the second half with home goalkeeper Matt Gwynne rarely tested.

“Their manager said we were clinical and we passed the ball with more purpose and I think that’s a fair reflection," remarked Edwards.

“They didn’t create many chances whereas we could have had four or five first half.

“We should be sat on a few more points than we are, but it is what it is.”

Westfields are now fourth in the league and have lost just once in the last eight games but Edwards is convinced his side should still be better.

He said: “I’m disappointed really, I think we should be sat here having won all the games.

“We should have beaten Boldmere, but we lacked strikers that day and we lost a two-goal lead at Continental Star.

This Saturday, Fields travel to 12th-placed Coventry Phoenix but they will be without midfielder Craig Jones through suspension.

Edwards said: “The way he got sent off was disappointing because he makes us tick.

“Phoenix are a quick team, we always have a good game and they have got lots and lots of pace.

“We got to make sure we match them pace for pace.”

The club are also hoping to become the first team to win the HFA County Challenge Cup five times in a row and will play Fownhope in the quarter finals at allpay.park.

Edwards said: “We look forward to these games.

“Fownhope will get the same treatment as everyone else, we will make sure we watch them – there is no foregone conclusion.

“No team has ever won for five years so that’s our goal.”
