PRESTEIGNE captain Lesley Phillips will be playing Down Under next week in the FIH 2016 Masters Hockey World Cup.

Phillips is the only Mid Wales player to be selected for the tournament which takes kicks off in Canberra on Tuesday.

Her Presteigne team, meanwhile, went down 2-1 to Premier 2 leaders Rhondda in their penultimate game of their South Wales League Hockey season.

Presteigne started well and played attacking hockey from the start.

A timely pass by Sioned Price found Jess Goodwin to slot home to take the lead after five minutes.

Presteigne made numerous runs down the right, with Price, Ellie Williams and Beth Watson crossing for Jess Goodwin to shoot on goal.

But on each occasion, they were foiled by an in-form Rhondda goalkeeper.

Presteigne managed to hold on to their lead and go into the break 1-0 up, but Rhondda came back in the second half to win the game.

In the West Clubs' Women's Hockey League, Hereford went down 2-0 to Chippenham in their penultimate match.

Their last fixture is against Marlborough on April 2.

In North Division, Leominster lost 3-1 to Westberries 2nd and are third from bottom, but Hereford 2nds were celebrating after thrashing Cheltenham Civil Service 5-0 in Severn Division 1. However, in the same division, Colwall & Malvern went down 7-0 to third-placed Cheltenham 4ths.

In Severn Division 2, Ross-on-Wye lost 3-0 at home to Badgers and in Severn Division 3, Colwall & Malvern 2nds were hammered 13-1 by league leaders Evesham & Badsey.
