ROSS-on-Wye’s Nick Ellis stormed to victory in the Gloucestershire Golf Union’s 36-hole 2009 County Colts Championships.

Ellis, 19, finished the morning round at his home club with a highly impressive 4-under-par gross 68 score.

Despite difficult weather conditions in the afternoon, Ellis’ gross 73 score put his overall tally to 141 - six shots ahead of his nearest rival.

Another Ross player, Alex Bain, achieved the best afternoon score of gross 70, and secured the runners-up spot, with a 147 total.

In the best nett score event, Ross’ Harry Butler took the top spot with a nett 144.

Ross carried off the Annual North Gloucestershire Silver Salver Trophy for only the second time, at Broadway GC.

Captained by John Bayliss, the Ross team included Graham Smith, Mike Cooper, Steve Wallbank, David Griffiths, Neil Lancett, Robert Brain and Barry Robbins.

Sevens clubs competed for the top prize at the 27-hole event.

Ross C team recorded a 4.5 points to 1.5 points friendly success over visiting Worcester Golf & Country Club, The Ross wins came from Bob Timms and Robin Henderson-Pugh 4/2, Danny Gear and Ali Timms 5/4, Paul Reynaert and Peter Chapman 2/1, Nick Swan and Peter Landau 4/2.

Ross Seniors secured a convincing six points to two home win over Stinchcombe Hill Seniors.

The Ross wins were achieved by Peter Lowe and Nick Swan 4/3, Tim Rigden and Neville Ovens 4/2, Gerald Turner and Cec Wheatstone and Ken Vowles and Keith Ray who both won 5/4 and John Church-Jones and Geoff Baker 5/3.

q Richard Lloyd shot 77-5-72 to win the 0-14 section of Belmont GC’s August Medal.

Colin Gladwin (78-6-72) was second and Nick Hemming (84-12-72), third.

Thomas Graham carded 94-23-71 to finish top of the 14-28 section on a countback.

Keith Morris (87-16-71) was the runner-up and third-place went to George Cozens (88-15-73).

Angus Maclean secured first price in the seniors’ stableford after carding 36 points.

Geoff Foster (35 points) was second and Steve Holdsworth (34 points), third.

Paul Gosling, David Atkinson, Ray Saunders and Steve Holdsworth clinched the Kiwi Cup after totalling 122 points.

Brian Goode, Maurice Embrey, Des Samuel and John Alexander were the runners-up with 121 points.

Roger Smith (74-9-65) was first in the 0-14 handicap section of the seniors’ August Medal.

Ken Shurmer (81-10-71) also played well and finished in second spot.

Duncan Kennett-Wise (102-28-74) triumphed in the 15-28 section from second-placed Gordon Riddell (94-20-74).

q The Stretfordians team of Nigel Moore, James Duggan, T Miller and J Young won a highly successful Luctonians Golf Society Am-Am day at Leominster.

The winning side carded 91 points and were closely followed by the Luctonians team of Alex Valentini, C Cossack, J Surrey and J Brace who shot 90 points.

Feather Pluckers took the yellowball prize with 33 points and the team was made up of Rod Mee, Stuart Mee, David Hemming and Tony Nourse.

Tomo’s Odds and Sods were second, with 32 points, and nearest-the-pin prize winners were Simon Hussey, Jim Archer, Alex Quinn and Dennis Mills.

James Duggan won the longest drive for the under-69 section and Dennis Mills took the award for the over-70 section.

q Bobby Drummond, with 35 points, triumphed in the low handicap section of The Herefordshire GC’s latest seniors’ competition.

Paul Roberts, with 33, was second and third place went to Clive James (32 points).

Robert Archer fired 34 points to win the high handicap section from second-placed Brian Welling (33 points) and third-placed Geoff Rees (30 points).

q Tony Bufton pipped Gerald Cooke to clinch the Royal British Legion Cup at Leominster GC.

Bufton shot 84-17-67 to win the cup on a countback from second-placed Cooke (79-12-67).

Vince Fish (85-16-69) also played well and finished in third place.

Doug Hill (85-20-65) won the Newlands Cup, while Norman Greener (94-27-67) was second and Bob Holloway (87-20-67), third.

q Martyn Jones carried off the top prize in Cradoc’s captain’s away day at The Herefordshire GC.

Jones carded a winning haul of 40 points, while Ken Williams was second with 39 points and captain Paul Exton (38 points) finished third.

David Watkins took top honours in the club’s latest Midweek Medal after shooting 79-15-64.

Huw Rodwell (88-21-67) was second and Mike Powell (86-18-68), third.

Harising Gurung clinched the Jubilee Cup after a return of 87-24-63.

Gareth Watkins (79-12-67) was second and Rob Evans (75-7-68) finished third. Evans also secured the best gross.

Cradoc Seniors had a close five matches to three home win against The Herefordshire. It avenged Cradoc’s 6-1 away defeat earlier in the season.

The Wayfarers suffered a 5-0 defeat at Rhondda but then bounced back to beat their rivals 4-1 at Penoyre Park.

They also halved their match at home to league leaders Blackwood. The match finished 2.5-all.

Cradoc’s Hallets finished their disappointing season with four wins, six defeats and two halves from their 12 matches.

q Ron Davies-Jones shot 78-11-67 to take the top honours in Division 1 of the seniors’ July Medal at Kington GC.

Dave Haley (87-16-71) was second and third position went to Terry Inskip (83-12-71).

Rodney Crosby (96-20-76) won Division 2 from second-placed Viv Weaver (103-24-79) and third-placed Dave Nolan (106-24-82).

Matt Burgoyne triumphed in the latest Wednesday night competition after carding 39 points.

George Smith (34 points) topped Division 1 and Pat Woodhouse (35 points) won Division 2.

Mike Powell also played well and secured the leading position in Division 3 with a return of 38 points.
