SENIORS golfer Brian Faulkner triumphed in another close finish to Leominster Rankin Club Society’s 20th annual open stableford for the Mathew Finney Memorial Cup.
Faulkner, at 72 years the oldest competitor in a good field, scored 36 points in fine conditions on the Leominster course, but it needed a count-back on the back nine holes to separate him from runner-up Ronan Barwell.
It was the third successive year that the cup had been decided on a count-back and last year’s winner Nick Palmer was third this time with 35 points, pipping his brother Russell, fourth, on yet another count-back. Russell Palmer also won the prize for the longest drive.
Jeremy Lawrence received the trophy for the best gross score, and other award winners included Phil Green for the most points on the par-three holes, and Derek Phillips and Harry Ellis for nearest the pin.
