HEREFORDSHIRE Golf Club seniors beat off the challenge of nine other clubs to carry off the Woodgate Challenge Trophy at Woodgate’s Usk course.

Chris Harrison led the eight-strong team which also featured Barry Stevenson, Phil Manns, Gary Duncalfe, Bill Sisley, Dave Falconer, Kevin Baylis and Terry Garratt.

The stableford competition saw the best six scores added together to decide the result.

n The Morgan family completed a double when Ross GC held their club championship finals day.

James Morgan became the men’s club champion to match the achievement of his father Gwynne, who last month became the club’s senior champion.

The pair had also carried off the two titles in 2010.

James Morgan was given a tough battle by Tim Wyatt in the club championship final with Wyatt battling back from six down at the halfway stage in the 36-hole competition before eventually succumbing 4 and 3.

President Di Honey, club captain Phil Wilson and lady captain Jeanette Forrester were on hand to officiate at the annual trophy presentation which followed the conclusion of the club championship. They were joined by Brian Huggett, who presented his Brian Huggett Trophy to junior captain, 16-year-old Niall Powell, who has enjoyed a successful year.

Vice-captain Bob Holloway’s team came out on top in a challenge match against teams led by president Roger Barrington and captain Clive Malcolm.

Holloway was the top scorer for his team on countback, followed by Callum Gillis with both players recording 39 points.

Malcolm led the way for his team, also on countback, with Ian Gullis in second place. Both players returned 38 points.

Top scorers in the president’s team were Mike Barrington, 37 points, and Bryan Leech, 34.

Cradoc GC stalwarts Anthony Payne and Terry Eckley won the pairs four ball better ball stableford competition in the Mid Wales Allianc at Aberdovey GC, with 41 points.

Senior section captain Graham Chamberlain’s away day at Morlais Castle GC: 1 Windsor Griffiths 33 pts, 2 Dave Holton 32, 3 Derek Lloyd 28.

The seniors were beaten 4-2 at Rolls of Monmouth where the winning pairs were Clive Price and Dave Matthews (2 and 1) and Colin Rosser and Rob Goodwin (1 up).

Seniors’ end-of-season championship cup, the Roy Alp Trophy: 1 Roy Morgan 73 nett, 2 Anthony James 74 on cb, 3 Colin Rosser 74.

Rorke’s Drift Stableford: 1 Bradley Lynch 40 pts on cb, 2 Craig Samuel 40 on cb, 3 Gary Jenkins 40 on cb, 4 Brian Nelson 40. Despite the difficult conditions, Lynch scored a hole in one on the 17th, the most difficult par three on the course.

Midweek nine-hole stableford: 1 Matthew Williams 21, 2 Bradley Lynch 20 on cb, 3 Dhir Gurung 20.
