ROSS GC’s Helen Palmer has retained the Herefordshire County Championship for a second year.

Belmont’s Gemma Allen claimed the nett title and led her Belmont quartet, also including Jennifer Gladwyn, Holly Hemming and Sandie Foster, to the team title for the fourth consecutive year when the tournament was held at Leominster GC.

“Leominster Ladies’ Section had organised a fantastic day and the course was prepared extremely well,” said Allen.

“I managed to make a personal best score and scored one over gross on the front nine.

“Hopefully Belmont Ladies Section can keep building on their success.”

Gross competition: 1 Helen Palmer 79, 2 Tina Wooldridge 81, 3 Emma Harris 86.

Nett competition: 1 Gemma Allen 68, 2 Chris Thurgood 73 (on c/b), 3 Julie Powell 73.

q Alex Allen, of Herefordshire GC, has won the Shropshire and Herefordshire County Championship title at Ludlow GC.

Allen tied for the lead with Kris Williams of Wrekin GC and Matthew Birch from Market Drayton GC after shooting rounds of 72 and 71 but held his nerve to take the crown at the third extra hole of the sudden-death play-off. He has become the fifth golfer from the Herefordshire club to take the title and builds on his second-place finish at the county spring trials at his home club earlier in the year.

q Paul Bristow won the Peter Burge Cup on the Belmont Seniors’ away day at Peterstone Lake with a nett 74 and took the Colwall Cup just days later with the same score.

The Seniors’ par three championship was won by Gordon Perkins with 42 pts.

Belmont’s annual Captain’s Charity day raised more than £1,150 for Acorns Children’s Hospice. The event organised by club captain Stewart Thomson is the first event this year for his nominated charity and was well supported with 80 players taking part: 1 Harvey Hancock 40 pts, 2 Brian Gough 38, 3 Lee Bright 37.

Cradoc Wayfarers beat Green Meadow 3½-1½ with wins for Brian Nelson and Les Gwynne, Nick Morrell and David James and Clive Pearson and Tom Price.

In the return match, there was another success for Cradoc, this time 3-2, with wins for Gary Jenkins and Alan Denning (2and1) and Clive Pearson (2and1) while Martin Jones and Tim Astle and Martyn Aldworth and Brian Nelson secured halves.

Cradoc Seniors were beaten 6½-1½ when the winning pair were Dave Sheppard and Geoff Hardy (3and2) with Roger Thornhill and Dave Matthews securing a half.

q Mercia Accident Rescue Service, or MARS, held a golf day at Herefordshire GC when around £3,500 was raised for the charity.

Doctors and nurses who are trained trauma specialists from the charity in Herefordshire are ready to jump in their cars to get to serious accidents before paramedics or the Air Ambulance can arrive.
