PEGASUS Juniors made Newport County battle all the way at Old School Lane before the newly-promoted League Two club were able to leave with a 2-0 success.

The Conference play-off winners brought a mixture of youth and experience in a game which brought back memories to both camps.

Back in 1988 when the previous County incarnation had suffered a financial collapse, the Welshmen joined the Hellenic League and their first opponents were Pegasus.

The game also provided a reunion when Juniors boss Chris Hyde met up again with County general manager Tim Harris, to whom he was assistant for several seasons as the Exiles moved up through the leagues.

A shot against an upright by Danny Crow was the nearest that either side came to breaking the deadlock in the first period.

But it took just seconds after the break for County to break through with Connor Washington dispatching a Crow cross past 16-year-old Pegasus keeper Zeke Vivian.

Headers from Keith Jones and Kane Kahaki came close to levelling the scores for Juniors but County expended their lead on 69 minutes when Washington scored from the spot after Andrew Hughes had been felled.

On Saturday, Pegasus played two matches against Combined Counties side Camberley Town.

Steve Smith (2), Richard Harrison (2), Jason Prosser and Kahaki scored as Pegasus won the first match 6-3, but Camberley gained revenge in the second outing with Chris Mortlock notching the only Juniors contribution in a 4-1 reverse.
