NEWPORT County general manager Tim Harris is looking to wind back the clock when the Exiles take on Pegasus Juniors tonight (Thursday).

The League Two outfit visit Old School Lane for a rematch of their first competitive game after bankruptcy forced County to start from scratch in the Hellenic League in 1989.

Despite fitting this “nostalgic” game in between matches with Reading and Aston Villa, Harris said County will bring an experienced side to Hereford.

“It’s nice to be able to go back,” said Harris, who came through as a youngster at County alongside Colin Addison.

“Its phenomenal what our club’s gone on to do – but it’s important never to forget your roots.

“We’ve had a pretty intense pre-season, and we’ve got one or two players carrying knocks but there will be some experienced players running out for us.”

Pegasus manager Chris Hyde worked as Harris’ assistant at County, and the Newport boss insisted that it was a big reason behind setting up the fixture.

He said: “We want to support Chris, he’s got a great footballing brain and he’ll do well at Pegasus this year.

“Hopefully we can get a few fans down and help out the club.”

Harris, however, refused to be drawn on the added pressure of facing his former assistant - “It’s not that sort of game,” he added.

Pegasus had mixed fortunes in their weekend pre-season double-header, beating Newent Town 4-2 before shipping four themselves in a loss to Bartestree. Cory Hyde and Keith Jones both bagged a brace in their opening friendly triumph, while Kane Kahaki then added a consolation strike against Bartestree.

Westfields opened their season with a win over international opposition – beating Welsh League Division One’s Haverfordwest County 2-1 at allpay.park.

Westfields trailed at the break but, shortly after half-time, Craig Jones feeding Carl Morgan, who cut inside to beat two defenders before hammering in a superb shot from 12 yards.

Then Mike Palmer announced his arrival at the club in style, smashing a 20-yard drive into the top corner.

On Saturday, Worcester City visit allpay.park for the first time since opening the ground in 2004.
