THE new manager of the HFA County Youth team says it was a no brainer to have Joel Edwards on board to assist the team.

Former Hereford FC captain Edwards will join Wellington player Will Perkins in coaching the under-18s next season.

"I used to work with Joel with the Hereford United community side and he is well known to a lot of the players," said Perkins, who is a Uefa B coach who works with the Football Association.

"He is a top bloke who has got good footballing knowledge, so I'm really pleased he has confirmed that he will take on the role.

"I was really impressed with what he has done in the city in the last couple of years in leading Hereford on and off the pitch.

"He is a fantastic ambassador and is well respected."

The under-18s withdrew from the Midlands Counties League last season after seeing a number of games called off.

Perkins therefore wants to create excitement around the side.

"Hereford have always created good players and there's always been decent county teams," said Perkins.

"Part of it is managing players and having the right skills to influence them.

"I see it as a joint partnership between myself and Joel and we want to see a big upturn around the county side."

HFA spokesman Bryan Bouston said Perkins and Edwards were chosen because they know the county scene well.

"They are both experienced players who are keen to do well," he said.

Elliot Payne, meanwhile, will continue in his position as physio.
