WESTFIELDS manager Sean Edwards says he’s not looking at the league table despite his side closing in on the Midlands Football League leaders.

The allpay.park men had a lastgasp Craig Jones penalty to thank for a 3-2 victory over Coventry Sphinx on Saturday, cutting the gap to seven points over league leaders Alvechurch with five games in hand.

However, Edwards wants his side to be more clinical as they
let Coventry pull them back from two goals ahead to 2-2.

“For me, we obviously deserved to win it,” said Edwards.

“It should have been a lot more comfortable after the first half but Coventry had a right go and deservedly got back into the tie.

“Really if we’d have taken our chances we should have scored a few more.

“I never look at the league table and I’m not bothered what the other teams are doing.

“I know if we start winning games then it’s in our hands. We
have to try and find that momentum again and keep clean sheets in matches.”

It took Westfields just 10 minutes to take the lead at Sphinx
with a fine solo effort from Chris Ham who ran down the left-hand side, cut inside and hit his shot into the top right-hand corner.

Ten minutes later, Sirdic Grant who returned to the team from injury, sped down the right side before squaring the ball back and Nick Harrhy raced in to slide the ball home.

Despite their two-goal lead, Kieron Blackburn made two saves, while both Sam Plane and Phil Glover cleared shots from off the Westfields goal line.

In the second half, as the foggy conditions worsened, Coventry got back into the game.

Jamie Towers pulled a goal back midway through the half and then, with Westfields struggling to contain the hosts, Coventry drew level with ten minutes to play.

However, in a grandstand finish, Westfields forced a late corner and, when Phil Glover was pulled back in the penalty area, the referee awarded a spot-kick which Jones dispatched to give Westfields a 3-2 win.

Ahead of their home league game against Stourport Swifts
on Tuesday, Edwards is hoping to bring in some fresh faces.

He added: “We have a few players carrying knocks and a few coming back from injury so we might need one or two more players.

“Our players have played as many games already as other
clubs do in a season.

“Stourport will come here playing well as they won on Saturday against St Andrews.

“At the moment, until we get a consistent run of performances together, we are scrapping for points.

“However many league games we have got left, they are all cup inals.”
