JAMIE Edge says he understands the Hereford FC supporters expect the Bulls to challenge for promotion again this season.

Pete Beadle's men start their Southern Football League South & West campaign with a trip to AFC Totton this Saturday before they host Mangotsfield United three days later.

And Edge knows what to expect having played a number of games in the division.

"Just before I came to Hereford the first time, I played for Cirencester," explained Edge.

"They actually ended up winning the league and I played 15 or 16 games for them.

"It's a tough league, but we feel we're well prepared for it.

"We realise the fans want us to challenge and we're more than capable of doing that.

"It will be tough and will be a step up from last season, but we're more than capable of challenging at the top of the league and that's our aim."

This is Edge's second spell at Edgar Street having played for Hereford United in the 2013/14 season.

"I think Purds [Rob Purdie] and Joel [Edwards] were here last time, but Beads runs the club in a similar way," added Edge.

"He demands respect but is a very friendly man and has been great with me.

"Obviously the league we're playing in is different, but there similarities from when I was here before.

"I think I've developed quite well.

"When I played here the last time, I was 19 and now I'm 22 so a bit more experienced.

"I've got 80 or 90 games under my belt in Conference South and the South & West, so I think I've improved as a player.

"Hopefully I can show that in the forthcoming season."

Edge is predominately a central midfielder, but has filled in at centre-back during Hereford's last couple of pre-season friendlies.

"I have played centre back throughout my career in little spells," said Edge.

"I don't like playing there as much, but I'll play anywhere to play in the team.

"My natural position is central midfield and hopefully I'll be back there."
