WELLINGTON chairman Phil Smith admitted it was doubtful whether last Saturday's match against Cradley would go ahead.

Heavy rain during the morning caused havoc to the majority of games in the county.

But Wellington's pitch held out ensuring the spectators were treated to a goal-fest.

"We looked at the pitch at 10am and the pitch was 50/50," said Smith.

"But the forecast was good for the afternoon and we know the pitch.

"We look after it every day and know what it can stand and cannot stand.

"The boys were looking forward to the New Year and we needed to get it on.

"I think it was the right call and the result justified it."

Some members of Hereford United Supporters Trust watched the game and Smith admitted any extra fans will always help Wellington.

"What we hope is that Hereford FC rise again and we will be here to support them," said Smith.

"So anything we can do to keep them going is ok by us.

"We haven't got many people who come and watch us, so the extra few does help quite a bit."
