Pegasus Juniors play down chances in HFA County Challenge Cup final

PEGASUS Juniors are playing down their chances in next week's HFA County Challenge Cup final despite extending their run in the league to 10 wins from 11 with a 2-1 win over Dudley Town.

Like his Westfields counterpart, Pegasus manager Chris Hyde is rejecting the favourites tag; he says there is “no chance” that form trumps higher-graded experience going into a cup final.

Hyde’s side are pushing for the top of the West Midlands League Premier Division.

Anthony Robbins' free-kick gave Pegasus the lead against Dudley, before striker Kane Kahaki headed home a corner to double their advantage.

“I looked back at the video and we were in control against Dudley,” said Hyde, who will lead his side against fifth-placed Sporting Khalsa this Saturday.

“Our players are doing two percent more than they need to win the games.”

“Sporting Khalsa a big game because it’s the next game.

“There’s no point looking at what other teams are doing – we can only do what we can do.”

Stepping up to play Midland Football Alliance side Westfields will be a different proposition, and Hyde says he knows that that ‘two percent’ will not be enough to lift the HFA County Cup final.

“We play the way we play – that’s no disrespect to Westfields but if I said to our boys we’re going to play five at the back and four across the middle they wouldn’t have it,” Hyde said.

“But there is no way we are favourites – no chance.

“It’s fantastic for us, but I try to take the emotion out of it.

“Westfields have been playing in a higher league all year – it’s like us playing a top-three team every week – and they have all the experience of playing in cup finals.

“Craig Jones and Jamie Cuss are exceptional - they could easily be playing for Hereford United.”
