BROMYARD have retained their outside chance of promotion from Division One of the Worcestershire League after two big wins at the weekend.

Colwall remain well-placed in Division Two while Bartestree and Lugwardine maintain an outside hope in their debut season in Division Four.

Bromyard’s Ryan Tongue had a weekend to remember with centuries in the Flagonners Green club’s wins over Pedmore and Oldswinford.

On Saturday, he flayed the Pedmore attack for an unbeaten 146, slamming 22 fours and three sixes in an unbroken stand of 260 for the fourth wicket with Eral Anderson, who weighed in with 14 fours and six sixes in his 131 not out.

Not content with starring merely as a batsman, Tongue picked up 3-10 to assist Greg Leighton (2-31), Dave Taylor (2-37) and Dinusha Fernando (2-45) in removing Pedmore for 216 and a 111-run win.

On Monday, Matt Bullock bowled well for Bromyard, taking 6-83 but Oldswinford were still able to put together an impressive 272.

However, it was nowhere near enough to test the home batsmen with Tongue (101) joined on this occasion by Fernando (146no) in an opening stand of 265, the highest partnership for Bromyard for any wicket in the Worcestershire League, as they romped home by nine wickets with more than 18 overs to spare.

In Division Two, Colwall’s batting suffered an off-day at Bewdley as they were forced to hold on for a draw at 126-9 in response to 217-7.

But the Malvern Hills club were involved in a thriller with divisional leaders Harvington on Monday.

Dan McKay (66) led the way as Colwall compiled 204.

Jacob Rodgers (29no), Ben Wheeler (28) and Jonathan Abel (27) also made usual scores.

The Harvington 50 overs came to a close four short of victory with one wicket in hand as Max Backhouse (4-48) and Mike Gooch (2-32) dominated the Colwall bowling.

Wormelow were involved in two draws over the weekend programme.

They fell 19 runs short of victory with two wickets in hand at home to Feckenham and then Tim Boulter (73) and Lee Watkins (55no) passed the half-century mark as they had rather the better of matters at Netherton.

In Division Three, Jack Evans enjoyed an excellent weekend with the bat for Ross-on-Wye.

The opener propelled the South Herefordshire club to a superb five-wicket victory at Avoncroft with an unbeaten 63.

And he bettered that on Monday with an unbeaten 106, sharing in an unbroken third-wicket partnership with Bruno Warwick (69 no) as Ross came up just one wicket short of victory against Harborne.

Bartestree and Lugwardine were held to a draw by visiting Bromsgrove 3rd which makes it likely that the villagers will spend a second season in Division Four.

They will need to beat champions Old Vigornians in their final match and still hope that matters go their way in the games involving second-placed Chaddesley Corbett and third-placed Cleobury Mortimer.

Skipper Ben Simpkin (54) and in-form Luke Sparrow (44) set Bartestree’s innings off in fine style with an opening stand of 108 against Bromsgrove.

And then the visitors finished short of victory on 179-8 despite three more wickets for Sparrow (3-56) which took his tally to 20 in just the last four matches.

Colwall’s teenage all-rounder Ben Cooke was the undoubted star of the weekend in the second-team competition.

On Saturday against Bewdley, Cooke followed up his innings of 172 with a spell of 5-53 in a 217-run win.

And then, on Monday, he was again in the runs with 122no as his side had the better of a draw against Belbroughton.
