SCOTT Moran set a new course record and won both run-offs on a remarkable weekend of racing at Loton Park in the MSA British Hillclimb Championship.

The Orleton ace was one of two drivers to break the 44-second lap barrrier — the first time it had ever been achieved at the Shrewsbury venue.

“It was a phenomenal day,” said Moran, the current leader and reigning British champion. “I still can’t believe what I saw.

“Before the weekend, there were only four people to have gone under 45 seconds and now there are two of us who have done it in under 44 seconds.”

Dad Roger also had a good day, achieving a personal best of 44.66, as he finished third and fourth in the two run-offs.

Scott and his dad Roger will be competing at Doune, Scotland, this weekend before taking a well-earned rest from racing until July 7.

“In the first run-off, I missed the lap record by next to nothing,” explained Scott.

“Jos Goodyear did 44.75 and then did 43.82 in the afternoon run-off — the first person ever to go under 44 seconds at the course.

“Jos was the second car out of 12 and I was the last one out because I had qualified the fastest and I had plenty of time to watch.

“When he came out of the car he was delighted and did a little dance.

“Trevor Willis was in the car in front of me and he achieved 44.17 and I thought to myself that, if he could do it, then so could I.

“I then did 43.52 to set a new course record and I was over the moon.

“We knew there was a 43-second finish in this car and the conditions must have been spot on to achieve it. The pressure was on me and sometimes that can have an impact on how you drive.

“I knew that just one mistake and I would have lost the run. It was controlled aggression and it was a fantastic day.

“There were a lot of personal bests achieved and only a couple of people came away from the venue unhappy.”

Scott is now about 16 points clear at the top of the leaderboard from second-placed Trevor Willis.

“We have done three successive weekends of racing and we now have one left before we have a break and go back to work,” said Scott.

“This season is going well for me but it’s still all to play for. It will be interesting up in Scotland.”

l Allensmore’s Mike Turpin continues to lead the Midlands Championship after more success at Loton Park.

Turpin gained his fifth stratght class win and also broke the record for the class.
