OUR new director of football Gary Peters’ first three Saturdays have produced a draw and now two wins.

It’s quite an impact but Gary has not come in and taken over. He has simply added his knowledge, which is massive at this level, and other things in the way we have tried to play.

That has gone along with what we have been trying to do and wanted to do but now the personnel and the loans mean we can do what we have been wanting.

I don’t think Gary still believes, as he said when he arrived, that we are the worst team in the league!

He has come in and assessed things and can see that we have some decent, young athletic players here.

They have made a big difference and I think now he believes that we are a little better than he first thought.

That is great because the players have obviously stepped up to the mark and proved that.

The system we play at the moment, with two wide men to support one striker, is suiting us.

Steve Leslie is doing very well for us, as he did last season, and young Tom Barkhuizen is just a breath of fresh air.

He is an excellent footballer, a great lad and very knowledgeable about the game.

As well as all that, he wants to do well which, in a young player, is a terrific combination.

A couple of wins have given us a big sense of confidence going into some important games.

We have played seven of the top nine already and now we are in the midst of a run of games against teams who are around us in the table and in the bottom half.

But it is a very tight league and results have shown that everyone can beat each other. What we have done is to give ourselves a chance to catch up with everyone again.

We have players coming back to fitness and we have seven loan players so that creates a bit of a juggling act when it comes to selection.

But that is part and parcel of the job and I have Gary’s experience to help and guide me in that confrontational aspect.

As a manager, probably the hardest part of the job is to face that confrontation with players and explain to them why you are trying to do things.

We have seven loan players and so two will always miss out; that is very difficult when you have the quality of loan players that we have.

Most players think that they should be playing and it is always hard to say what the reasons are when they are not. Sometimes it is not just down to ability, it is down to the numbers.

For every game, we have to pick a team which we think is going to win the game.

We don’t pick teams to lose or draw, each time we want to win and, in every circumstance, our selection is the team which we think is best suited to do that.

We are still looking to strengthen the squad because of the position we are in.

Realistically it will be January when any changes are made because we cannot really bring in any more loan players. Any arrivals before that will have to be players who are out of contract.

We have done well recently but we know there will be disappointments along the line.

It will be how we cope with those disappointments which show how we have progressed as a team.
