NOT many people would have predicted that Morecambe would be at the head of the table early in the season.

In the eyes of many, they were likely to be among the strugglers.

But they have found a bit of form, a bit of a golden touch and they are doing very well.

They have a young manager who has got them organised and very enthusiastic.

Crawley were always likely to be among the front-runners but hardly anyone would have thought they would be beaten 6-0 at Morecambe.

It’s a very tight league and that result showed that anything can happen.

We find ourselves at the wrong end at the moment and we have to get a run of form together to get us into a midtable position from where we can actually go and compete with some of them.

Down with us are some of the bigger clubs in the division.

Plymouth have obviously got their problems financially with their on-and-off takeover talks.

That doesn’t help them at all.

And Northampton are in a situation which, I am sure, they had not expected to be in.

The fact that clubs like that are down there just serves to prove that the league is very tight this year.

The Crewe manager Dario Gradi has said that the division, this season, is as hard as it has ever been.

So it’s going to be a tough season for everyone and we all have to pick up points wherever we can.

People usually say that the division settles down after 12 games. You can then see where you are at, but, this season, it could even be a few more than that because of the nature of the division and how competitive it is going to be.

We have not got enough points, goals or clean sheets and we have to do something about it to put that right.

Shrewsbury, who are one of the more fancied sides this season, were a typical Graham Turner side on Saturday.

They were very well organised, passed the ball when they could and hurt you when they could.

Looking across their pitch, they have some exceptional talent.

In comparison with us, we have to think whether we could afford or attract players like that.

The answer is probably not but you have to dig in, think about what you do have, work on it in training and then hopefully you will get some reward.

But I still believe – and I will keep repeating myself on that – that this group of players are better than they were last year.

We’re always looking to freshen up our training and, last week, we had a chance to do some boxing.

We have already played a lot of football and it’s nice to have a complete change.

There are a lot of things in boxing that you can take into football.

First and foremost, there is the mental aspect of it, then the fitness, the fast feet, the core stability, the strength – all of those things come out in boxing and it was good for the players to think about something different.

I didn’t have the gloves on myself, but there were a few I would not have fancied facing, especially Delroy Facey and Michael Townsend!

I would have been more likely to go in the ring with James McQuilkin but he was quite quick with the gloves as well.

It was a good occasion and great for everyone to get involved with.
