A Ross-on-Wye rowing coach is celebrating after leading his Wales squad to victory in the Home International Regatta.

Robin Fletcher (pictured back row, far left) saw his squad see off the challenge of crews from England, Ireland and Scotland to take the top prize.

Fletcher began his coaching career at Ross Rowing Club before moving on to Monmouth School as boat house manager and coach.

Three years ago, he was approached by the Welsh Rowing International Committee to join their team of coaches, taking position of head coach of the Welsh Men’s Junior squad. He coached the 16-strong squad to four golds and three second places at the event in Cork, Ireland.

“The boys have worked incredibly hard this season and it paid off,” said Fletcher.

“Points are awarded for finishing positions from wins through to secord, third and fourth places.

"The Welsh boys gained 25 points out of a potential 28, which secured them the Junior Team Trophy."

This was the first time in more than 50 years that any Welsh rowing squad (across all ages and gender) had won an international team trophy at this event.
