JUDO player Stan Cantrill and cyclist Sarah Lloyd-Stephens will be carrying off top honours next week at the 2009 Herefordshire Sport’s Awards.

Cantrill and Lloyd-Stephens have been named the county’s Senior Sportsman and Senior Sportswoman of the Year.

They will be collecting their awards in next Wednesday’s ceremony at Hereford’s Royal National College for the Blind which starts at 7.30pm.

Judo player Cantrill will be picking up the Sportsman award for the second time - he first won it in 2001.

He is the British and Commonwealth Champion in his Masters category and ranked second in both the world and European standings.

The Leominster Judo Club chairman enjoyed a successful 2009 in which he won gold at the Hungarian Masters and took bronze at the inaugural European Judo Union World Championships.

The fifth Dan landed a gold and two bronze medals at the World Masters Athletic Championships in Atlanta, USA, and won gold for the third successive year at the British Masters Championships.

Cantrill, who lives at Aylestone Hill in Hereford, rounded off 2009 with a bronze medal for Great Britain at the European Union Veterans’ tournament in Italy.

Hereford & District Wheelers’ Lloyd-Stephens won the Welsh Women’s best all-rounder time trial competition in the Welsh Cycling Association.

Lloyd-Stephens, who lives in Westhope, became the first woman from Hereford Wheelers to win a Welsh National title.

She was also the fastest lady at club level over the 10-mile distance.

Para dressage rider Alison Moore has won the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award.

Moore, from Orleton, qualified for the Para Spring National Championships and the Summer National Championships in her maiden season.

She is a determined person with drive and commitment and has set her sights on competing for Great Britain at the London Paralympics in 2012.

Gymnast Emily Goring, from Dorstone, is the Junior Female winner for the second year in succession.

The 17-year-old will also be presenting the inaugural Emily Goring Award which has been initiated by Hereford Sparks Gymnastic Club and recognises ‘Excellence in Gymnastics’.

Ross Rowing Club’s Steve Tuck is the Junior Male Sportsperson of the Year.

Tuck rowed in the Great Britain J18 squad and won a gold medal at the Junior European Championships in France.

Hereford Sixth Form College student Chris Phillips, from Garway, is the Young Volunteer of the Year.

Phillips has coached Garway Juniors Under-12 football team for the past two seasons and, when he was 14 years old, became the club’s first qualified referee.

Phillips is an FA Level 1 coach and spends much of his free time assisting in developing sport for children.

Ross Rowing Club’s John Price will pick up the Service to Sport award.

Price has been coaching beginners from the Ross area for 20 years and is happiest when he is bringing on a new rower in the training sculling boats. Price has helped more than 100 new rowers gain a taste for the sport.

Emma Patrick, from Leominster Kingfisher Swimming Club, is the Coach of the Year.

Patrick coaches Great Britain Paralympic swimming stars Sascha Kindred and Nyree Lewis who shone in 2009.

She works hard to ensure the duo follow the work programmes demanded by British Swimming and is an integral part of the successful team.

While Kindred and Lewis have been honoured by the Queen, the couple believe their coach should receive the recognition and accolades her skills merit.

Ross Rowing Club’s Men’s High Performance Squad are the Senior Team of the Year.

They clinched a silver medal at the National Veterans’ Regatta, took gold in the Veterans B coxed IV at Henley and won the coveted West of England Challenge Vase. The squad also clinched top spot in the Veterans’ IV Head of the River race.

Ross Rowing Club’s Junior Academy have scooped the Junior Team award after a remarkable 2009 in which they amassed 82 victories and the junior squad were ranked third nationally.

The youngsters secured a gold and two bronze medals in the British Indoor Rowing Championships and five golds, a silver and six bronze medals in the Welsh Championships.

Deservedly, Ross Rowing Club are the Club of the Year after an outstanding 12 months at regional, national and international levels.

St Paul’s Primary School have been recognised as the Primary School of the Year.
