ROSS Rowing Club’s junior academy recorded two outstanding triumphs at the Wallingford Scull-ers Head 4,000-metre processional time trial.

Ellie Grindle and Amy Surman romped to victory in the Wj15 double sculls class – in the fastest time in their age group since records started in 1991.

Ellie and Amy then teamed up with Rosie Brandram Jones and Abi Beddard to win the quad event by 16 seconds from their nearest rivals.

Junior performance coach Ian Howell said: “The squad has been focusing on the quality of sculling and key performance metrics by learning to deliberate race plans and strategies.

“Combining this with the excellent cardio work completed, the result is to deliver the outcome we all so enjoy – winning.”

The Wallingford event traditionally attracts the premier clubs keen to benchmark themselves against each other in the winter training cycle.

The Ross squad have been working on their cardio fitness for the last three months.

Ellie Grindle and Amy Surman roared to victory in the Wj15 double sculls in 16.34, while Rosie Brandram Jones and Abi Beddard finished third.

In the afternoon division, the doubles teamed up to create a quad and were competing in a very large field with crews from many of the top schools in the country.

The Ross crew, coaxed by Morgan Baynham Williams, distinguished themselves, winning the event by 16 seconds from their nearest rivals, Sir William Borlaise.

In addition to the doubles, the women’s j16 single scullers of Ellie Black-wood and Lucy Jones came home in eighth and 12th places respectively out of 20 scullers.

Howell added: “The team have taken yet another step forward in the development journey and we will return to training to become even stronger, fitter and faster.”
