WESTFIELDS Reserves have moved closer to lifting the Hereford Times Herefordshire League Premier Division title with wins over Hinton and Kington Town during the last 10 days.

With three games left to play, Fields now lead the way by seven points, although Bromyard Town Reserves Sutton and Ewyas Harold, the only other sides in contention, do have games in hand.

In theory Westfields still need to win all their games to make mathematically certain of the title, in practice two wins and a draw should be sufficient as they have a far superior goal difference.

Westfields started with a 3-2 home win over city rivals Hinton in midweek.

They had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down in the opening minutes, but still took advantage of some indifferent defending by Hinton to open up a two-goal lead.

Jody Dave fired a free-kick into the top corner for the visitors on 35 minutes to set up a tense second-half.

Hinton played a lot better in the second period but crucially conceded the next goal. Dawe then had a shot deflected for an own goal to set up a close finish.

The visitors huffed and puffed, but Westfields came out on top.

On Saturday, Westfields were matched for 70 minutes at second-from-bottom Kington Town, but pulled away to win 4-1 after the home side had James Williams sent off midway through the second half.

Westfields made a dream start, taking the lead in the first minute. Kington kept their heads up and looked solid for the rest of the half.

The home side played well at the start of the second half, and Joe Penrose cut in from the wing and fired an equaliser into the bottom corner. Against 10 men, Westfields pulled away in the closing quarter to end up comfortable winners and leave Kington perilously close to the bottom of the table.

This position is currently occupied by Fownhope, who lost 5-0 at home to Bromyard Town Reserves. The result leaves Bromyard with an outside chance of the title.

Ewyas Harold are in good form and are emerging as the main threat to the city side after wins over Wellington Reserves and Ledbury Town Reserves.

They beat Wellington Reserves 2-1 at home on Saturday, but were tested all the way by the side that led the table for much of this year.

Wellington took the lead when Duncan Palmer’s fierce shot was deflected into the top-corner. Nick Panniers forced a fine save from Lindsay Vaughn at the one end, while Matt Eaden saved well from Joe Taylor and Matt Pitt to keep the Reserves in front.

The home side responded with two quick goals, with former Wellington player Tom Herbert featuring in both. He laid the first on for Ross Powell and then won the penalty from which Marc Avery snapped up the winner.

Wellington kept going but failed to make a breakthrough.

In midweek, Harold travelled to Ledbury and came away with a 2-1 win after another close tussle against Town Reserves.

Pitt gave them the lead at the second attempt, after his first effort had been excellently saved by Adi Hodges in the Town goal.

James Febery and Tom Doyle looked lively up front for the home side and Febery forced an equaliser when he got his foot to a Carl Wildig cross.

Ewyas Harold responded quickly with Pitt latching on to John Ferneyhough’s pass to restore their lead.

In an open game, both sides created chances with the home side hitting the woodwork on one occasion.

Reigning champions Woofferton were another side to pick up six points, but their hopes of retaining the title are gone.

On Saturday they beat Pegasus Reserves 4-2 at Old School Lane, to follow up a 3-0 midweek win over Leominster Town at Bridge Street Sports Centre.

After a competitive first half at Leominster, Woofferton scored goals either side of the break to take control, and went on to score again and win comfortably.

Leominster Town bounced back to complete a league double when they beat Ross Town 3-2 away from home at the weekend.

They fell behind in the 15th minute when a Ross forward rifled the ball home after picking up a weak attempted clearance.

The Leominster response was quick, with Jason Evans nodding an equaliser from a Jason Jones free kick.

Ross regained the lead in the second half, but back came Leominster to seal the win.

Evans turned in Paul Jones’ pull back to tie the score, and then Jones side-footed the ball past the keeper.

Ross Town also suffered a 1-0 midweek defeat at the hands of Pegasus Reserves at Holmer. The double win lifts Pegasus well clear of the bottom two in the table.
