WESTFIELDS have added marksman Oliver Barnes to their squad - who was the second highest scorer in the Hellenic Premier last season.

The 28-year-old scored an impressive 26 goals from 37 games for Brimscombe and Thrupp and joins Westfields’ forward line alongside Harrison Summers and Josh Hunt.

“It’s a good signing for us and gives us good options,” said Fields’ manager Phil Glover. “We played against him a couple of times last year and we impressed by his movement.

“We thought his movement when the ball was in wide areas was one of the best that we saw in the league, which is what we do a lot.

“His finishing with 26 goals, he’s a fox in the box and gets on the end of things. That’s the way we see him playing really.

“We’ve not brought him in instead of anybody but more to help the group. We’re excited by it, at times last year we played two up front and that’s going to be no different next season.”

Westfields finished seventh in the Hellenic Premier scoring 67 goals in 38 games - compared to the 110 of Malvern and 94 of title winners Cribbs.

Glover says that signing a striker in the summer was an important part of preparations ahead of the new season.

He added: “I think anyone who watches us play would say the same and all of our players would say that.

“It was something that we had to do in the summer. Recruitment has been tough this summer, the money flying round in non-league football is out of control at the moment.

“We were really keen to have something different to what we had last year and in Ollie we believe that we’ve got that.

“That killer instinct is where we didn’t kill teams off when we were on top last year.”
