HEREFORDSHIRE cricketers are still without a Minor Counties Championship win this season after succumbing to a strong Wales side by seven wickets at Pontarddulais.

The county attack, which was already without the unavailable Owen Price, suffered a further blow when Tom Glover was unable to bowl.

And the home side took full advantage on the first day, racking up 451-5. Richard Grant, who was called up to join the Glamorgan side to play Northampton-shire on the strength of his performance, cracked 112 while there were half-centuries for Tom Maynard (83), Michael O'Shea (79 not out) and Andrew Jones (60).

The wickets were shared by skipper Chris Boroughs (2-106), Josh Tingle (1-59), Gulsheraz Ahmed (1-107) and newcomer Lesroy Irish (1-135).

Herefordshire slumped to 19-3 after Richard Hall (0), Henry Langford (8) and Boroughs (5) were dismissed before the day's close of play.

Harshad Patel (53) and Dave Exall (30) rallied the innings at the start of the second day but wickets tumbled regularly as the visitors slid to 187 all out.

Patel (32) did his best to get the second innings underway in a more solid fashion after Herefordshire had been invited to follow on.

But other early wickets fell again with the notable exception of Boroughs (138) who showed all of his captain's qualities in making his ninth century for the county.

Wicket-keeper Ian Steven-son (39) and Irish (29) helped Boroughs in useful stands and the county eventually reached a creditable 361.

But the target of 98 presented few problems for the home county and, although Ahmed (2-11) and Irish (1-40), picked up three wickets, Grant (54) made a second decisive contribution as Wales eased home.
