TARMAC Bowls League leaders Kington suffered a shock defeat when they visited bottom club Wellington.

Kington held an unbeaten record stretching back to the beginning of May but in this, their second league defeat, only the rink skipped by Paul Pritchard saved them from a whitewash.

His rink won by five shots but the other three lost by 22 shots between them.

Wellington, who had lost on all four rinks in the earlier fixture between the two clubs, were led from the front by the captain's rink, skipped by Ken Hancocks.

They scored the day's best win by 15 shots, while a six-shot win from Tony Hoare's rink and a last-end win by one shot from Brian Evans' rink secured a win which lifted Wellington clear of the bottom of the table.

Earlier, Castle Green hosted the leaders in one of the first matches to be played after the recent rain which plagued club fixtures.

But they found no answer to Kington's play and lost by 44 shots.

Ken Edwards' rink for Kington easily picked up the day's highest score with a 34-17 shot victory, and Brinley Powell's rink chipped in with another 17-shot winning margin to put the match out of reach of the home club.

Leominster moved up to second place with two wins out of three matches played in a busy week.

Their visit to St Martin's produced a narrow seven-shot win which took them above the home club, even though the rink honours were shared.

John Harris's Leominster rink recorded the highest score with a 21-12 victory and was supported by Tracy Powell's rink with a 20-14 win. The St Martin's wins were by smaller margins in a tightly-fought match.

Leominster then went down by 14 shots against Kingsland, with only Brian Cade's rink win by three shots preventing a maximum points haul for the home club.

John Bevan's rink led the way for Kingsland with a 12-shot win with the other rinks coming in with two and three shot margins to record their sixth league win.

With games in hand on the clubs above them, Kingsland are now well placed in the run-in for league honours.

Meanwhile, Leominster recovered their form in their third successive away match to pick up another 14 match points at Weobley.

Only Roy Warburton's rink won for the home club with a 20-18 shot victory as Ron Perry's rink led the Leominster charge with a 33-10 shot win to take the match by 44 shots.

Previously, Weobley, who were third in the table, went down to St Martin's by one shot in a match where the advantage swung both ways.

After five ends, Weobley were 21 shots in front and seemed well in control, but then St Martin's came back to go 15 shots up after 15 ends.

Again Weobley put in a final effort and, with the last woods to play on the last rink to finish, the match was tied with Weobley holding shot.

Jim Knowles' last wood for St Martin's then edged out the Weobley shot bowled to win an excellent game with rink honours shared but the match points going to St Martin's.
