A MEMBER of Pentathlon Hereford claimed gold at a West Midlands regional competition.

Becky Wreyford was first in the combined event (laser shooting and running) with over 30 seconds to spare, before winning the riding the phase.

The St Mary's RC High School pupil was also top in the fencing with 19 victories and four defeats, with one of the wins coming against former world pentathlete champion Lydia Rosling.

This took Becky into the combined event of the under-15 girls category one minute 17 seconds ahead of Irish pentathlete Bo Connery-Butler, with Cotswold Pentathlete Poppy Clark a further four seconds adrift.

And with excellent shooting and consistent running, the Hereford ace easily ran past the post to take gold.

The event was hosted by Malvern Active, with former Olympic and national pentathlon coach Bernie Moss and ex-European Ironman Triathlon champion Kylie Mansfield on hand to offer advice.

In the under-17 girls category, Lucy Austin, of Hereford Cathedral School, took silver in the pentathlon with excellent performances throughout.

It was her second full pentathlon and she managed an excellent showjumping round with only a few penalty points.

In the fencing, Lucy had 15 wins and six defeats and managed a 200m freestyle swim in two minutes 20 seconds.

She then had some good shooting and running events to cross the line to take silver.

And in the under-13 boys triathlon, Thomas Roxburgh and Jamie Owen, from North Hereford Pony Club, made their debuts.

They were much younger than the other competitors, but put in solid performances, with Thomas taking bronze and Jamie finishing fourth.
