NEW Westfields signing Sam Hunt says he is relishing the challenge of trying to win the league with the allpay.park club.

Hunt, who is from Hereford, has joined from Cirencester Town and played most of Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at Coventry United in the Midland Football League Premier Division after coming on for Matt Reeve.

"The league is still in our hands I feel, we have a great squad here," said Hunt.

"In every league game we got into, everyone wants to knock us off our perch, but we've just got to take it game by game.

"If we are still up there at Christmas, then it will stand us in good stead.

Sam Hunt has dropped two leagues to join Westfields, but the versatile player says that doesn't bother him.

"Harvey Rivers got released at Cirencester and the travelling got a bit too much on my own because I travelled with him," added Hunt.

"Westfields started talking to me and yes, it's two leagues below where I was playing, but I think, with the squad we've got here, the club is on the rise.

"It's a challenge I'm looking forward to."

Hunt, who says his favoured position is left back, was part of Hereford FC's pre-season squad last season before being released.

However, he later won the Southern League South & West title with Cinderford before joining Cirencester.

"I enjoyed the experience at Hereford, they've got a good set of lads there," said Hunt.

"Myself and Pete Beadle spoke a few times and he kept me on up until the Pegasus friendly.

"We spoke about money, but nothing was offered to me.

"I think they will keep rising through the leagues with the fan base they've got and wish them well."

Westfields host second-placed Lye Town this Saturday in a mouthwatering game that could have a say as to who gains promotion.

"They are what I call a typical Midland League club in that they don't give you anything, so it's a big game for both clubs," said Westfields manager Sean Edwards.

"Alvechurch have won 13 on the bounce, so fair play to them, but Lye are my dark horses.

"They've only lost once this season and they have a strong, settled team.

"It will be a tough game."

Since bowing out of the FA Cup following their remarkable run, Westfields have stuttered of late, drawing two out of three league games and losing 4-1 against Coleshill Town in the FA Vase.

"It's completely different now because we've gone from the hype of the FA Cup to the nitty-gritty of the league," added Edwards.

"Saturday was massively disappointing because I wanted to do well in the Vase, but Tuesday night was a bit better.

"We were fortunate to get a point because they [Coventry United] were a decent side,

"We lost another two players to injury as well – Matt Reeve had to go off early in the game after pulling his hamstring and James Febery went off early in the second half with an ankle injury.

"But Sam Rawlings came back and played the second half, which was one plus point."

Craig Jones scored Westfields' goal.
