ROSS-on-Wye dominated the rinks at Bowls Herefordshire's county finals day.

David Watkins, Jeremy Watkins, Martin Smith and Rob Gwilliam won seven of the first eight ends against Kingsland's Malcolm Morgan, Cassie Jones, John Culver and Joe Scamp.

The Kingsland rink won three of the last seven ends, but were unable to close the gap and lost 26-9.

The county singles at Hereford Bowling Club was between Mike Holmes from Ledbury and Ross' Shaun Jones, with president John Colley marking

This was a tight game and after eight ends, the score was tied at 8-8, then 12-12 after 13 and 17-17 after 21.

On the final four ends, Mike Holmes picked up a 1, 1 and 2 to win 21-17 over 24 ends.

Tom Churchill of Eastnor competed against Ledbury's Dan Holmes in the Junior Singles Championship.

The early play went to Churchill, who led 7-0 after dour ends.

Holmes did recover though to lead 8-7 before Churchill responded by picking up a two and a three.

At this point, Holmes shortened the jack and managed to win six of the next seven ends, including a four on the 13th end to eventually win 21-14.

The two wood singles was an all Ross affair between Barry Payne and Shaun Jones.

Three two's was quickly picked up by Jones in three of the first four ends before Payne recovered to reduce the deficit to 9-5.

But Jones finished the stronger, winning the next six ends for ten shots and a 19-5 victory.

Ross also came top in the pairs, with Martin Smith and Rob Gwilliam triumphing 22-11 over Marcus Smith and Mike Holmes.

While the final game was the triples between Bulmers' Grenville Tomkins, Neil Macklin and Clive Handscombe and Dan Holmes, Mike Holmes and Mike Ricketts from Ledbury.

It was a very close affair with Bulmers leading by four shots with four ends to play.

Ledbury managed to pick up the remaining ends to win 18-14.

All the finalists will now represent the county in the National Championships at Royal Leamington Spa next month.
