AMERCIAN football could be coming back to Hereford.

Many people will remember the Hereford Chargers, who had large fanbase during the early 1980's.

The team trained at Castle Green and played matches at the Leisure Centre.

Now a new team has stepped forward to try and re-create those heady days.

Hereford Stampede are currently playing flag football, which, even though is similar to American football, is a non-contact sport.

The basic rules are the same, but instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier.

The team have been holding training sessions at Castle Green and last Sunday held a try out day at the leisure centre that saw 16 people turn up.

But their ultimate goal is to turn to American football and be involved in a league next season.

"Towards the end of the month, we're going to Wales to play Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff teams before taking part in open tournaments in the summer," said Hereford Stampede's Stephen Hall.

"Hopefully we will get into a league next season, but the aim at the moment is to just establish ourselves and get more experience.

"We want to play American football, but getting the equipment is quite expensive so we want to see if there is a demand in Hereford first."

The team was set up by a small group of men who are fans of the NFL.

"We all casually played American football at the weekend but wanted something more established," said Hall.

"We therefore decided to set up a team and go from there.

"Last Sunday's combine/try out event went really well and everyone enjoyed it."
