Monmouth-based duo Steve Jenkins and physio Jonny Evans part of Hereford United’s great escape
MONMOUTH-based duo Steve Jenkins and physio Jonny Evans were delighted with Hereford United’s great escape.
Jenkins has been United’s assistant manager for eight games, while Evans, a life-long Bulls’ fan, is the club’s physio.
The pair were over the moon at keeping United in the Conference Premier on a dramatic evening of nerve-jangling twists.
A late goal from Michael Rankine helped United beat Aldershot 2-1 and the Bulls avoided relegation after Salisbury struck late to claim a 2-2 draw at Chester, who were relegated on goal-difference.
“It was a roller-coaster of emotions – with the results changing throughout,” said Jenkins, who also manages Monmouth Town.
“But we always believed we would do it. It is a fantastic occasion for Hereford and, hopefully, we can use that momentum to kick on.
“It was mayhem in the changing room after the game – the boys were ecstatic with what had gone on.
“The lads kept their belief and got their rewards.
“Ranks came up trumps with his goal in the 88th minute. When Rhys Evans showed me the score from the Chester match on his phone, I realised we had a great chance to stay up.”
Jenkins was also pleased with Monmouth’s 6-2 win at West End.
“Monmouth Town have won again – to keep Hereford up and for Monmouth to win the league, it would be a fantastic season for me,” said Jenkins.
“But this result is fantastic for Hereford.”
Physio Evans, whose mum Anne Evans, was among the travelling Hereford fans, said: “The lads were brilliant – words cannot explain how it feels to stay up.”
Dan Walker’s run and cross set up Rankine’s winner for the Bulls.
“It was about time Dan did something,” joked Evans.
“Dan been around the squad all season – and deserved to play a leading hand in the club’s survival.”
