THE big fight of the night was that of Ledbury’s Alex Florence against Aston’s George Taylor.

With both boxers sons of the respective clubs' coaches, it was always going to be a contest not to miss and that was indeed the case as Florence won with the only KO of the night after dominating the bout.

The knockout came at the start of round three as yet another devastating combination from ‘Pinky’, as Florence is known in the boxing community, left the referee no option to stop the fight with Taylor struggling to get to his feet.

Alex, who admitted he could have been fitter, was pleased with his performance as he looks to build towards his dream of turning pro.

“The fight went well," he said. "I really should have been fitter but I didn’t know about the fight until last Sunday so, in the circumstances, not knowing anything about him apart from his weight, I think I did alright.

"The main thing for me is to approach each fight as it comes, preparation doesn’t change; to get to pro level in the next two to three years is the goal.

"I’ve been the same weight since I was 15, so I've just got to wait for my body to develop again and we can take it from there.”

One of Alex’s biggest supporters is his dad and coach Fred Florence who is excited about his son’s future in boxing.

“Alex can and will go all the way, he has fought some brilliant fights," said Fred. "He has brilliant speed, combinations and footwork.

"I couldn’t be more proud of him, he’s got the determination and drive to get to the top which is where he wants to be.

"We will be behind him all the way.”
