HEREFORD United’s youth set-up is facing the axe – just weeks after the youngsters forced extra-time against Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup, writes DANIEL WILKINS.

The Bulls’ youth set-up will be disbanded at the end of the season unless United can secure in excess of £65,000 funding, the club revealed today.

“If negotiations with a potential sponsor are in not in advanced stages by February 17, the youth set-up at Edgar Street will not continue into the new season,” said a statement from United’s board of directors, “Whilst this is very disappointing, this was a unanimous decision made by the board.

“The aim is clear: to focus all of the clubs efforts and revenues on the first team squad to provide a competitive playing budget whilst working to the break even budget.”

United’s under-18 team is run by former Newport County boss Peter Beadle, with help from Monmouth Town manager Steve Jenkins.

United’s superb FA Youth Cup run has been, by far, the bright spot for the cash-strapped club this term in a desperately disappointing campaign on and off the pitch.

United’s statement from the board said: “The first-team playing budget for the 2014/15 season will be based upon forecasts that are derived from this year’s income.

“As a result of this decision, which has been widely requested by supporters and shareholders, the club will not be able to sustain loss-making areas.

“Unfortunately, despite the youth team having an outstanding season this season, they face the loss of all central funding for the 2014/15 season.

“It is therefore that the youth team will cost the club in excess of £65,000 during the 2014/15 season.

“The club have attempted to achieve sponsorship for the youth team for the coming season, but, to date, no sponsor has been found. “ The club statement added: “We have not given up hope of obtaining a sponsor, and will continue to discuss sponsorship options with any parties that wish to support the youth section.”
