Westside still in search of first victory

WESTSIDE are still looking for their first win of the West Midlands Netball League Division Two season after a 40-23 reverse against Sutton Town.

But the city club's new and relatively inexperienced team are now starting to play with some cohesion and the margin of victory still ensured that they returned with a point.

The Westside starting line-up of of Georgi Wood - GS, Anna Mulderrig - GA, Kate Bishop - WA, Rebecca Griffin - C, Kate Pearce - WD, Kayleigh Mumford - GD and Steph Snowzell - GK got off to a good start with some early turnovers in mid court and defence from Griffin and Snowzell.

Strong defensive work forced errors but it didn't take long for Sutton to fight back with a string of turnovers resulting in a flourish of goals, enabling them to take the lead 11-7 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was strong defensively thanks to tight marking from the combination of Pearce and Mumford allowing only 8 goals for Sutton, while at the other end the attacking combination of Mulderrig and Wood worked well, but struggled with height for rebounds in the circle. Despite great supportive play from Bishop and Griffin the half time score still favoured Sutton, 19-13.

At half-time, Sutton brought on a taller shooter and new WA while Westside handed a debut toLucy Cassidy at WD.

Sutton relished in the change with the height advantage working in their favour as they built a lead of 32-18 by the end of the third quarter.

Cassidy then moved to GS, player-of-the-match Mulderrig to C and Griffin to WA in a successful move which saw Cassidy introduce dominance at the top of the circle allowing Mulderrig and Griffin to feed the circle effectively.

But Sutton's attack continued to be in accurate form and they were still able to win the last quarter 8-5.

Westside play fourth-placed Midrange on Saturday.
