SWIMMER Sascha Kindred has stormed to his seventh world title - and proved he’s still at the peak of his powers.

The 35-year-old star raced to gold at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal - just 12 months after agony in London.

He has received ‘well done’ messages from British swimming legends Duncan Goodhew and Nick Gilligan.

And Sascha is planning to talk to coach Emma Patrick about his swimming future in the next couple of weeks.

“I still felt I had something to prove to myself,” said Sascha, who has now won 52 medals at major championships.

“I have not got anything to prove to people because I have achieved so many things in the pool - but I wanted to prove to myself that I could still do it.”

Sascha defeated his great rival, China’s Qing Xu, who finished third, to win his fourth successive world title last week in the men’s SM6 200m individual medley.

Xu broke Kindred’s heart last year and shattered his world record to take gold at London 2012.

“I was pleased and proud of my silver medal at London last year - but it is a great feeling to be back on top spot,” said Sascha.

“I have won 20 medals at World Championships and I had a smile on my face when I was on the podium getting my medal in Montreal - it was a special moment.”

Sascha, who lives in Hereford, made his World Championship debut in Malta in 1994.

He said: “I spoke to Qing Xu after our latest battle in Canada - he can speak a little bit of English.

“We are great rivals in the pool - but he is a friendly guy and said he was really pleased for me and that I had done very well.”

Sascha clocked an impressive 2.41.82, defeating Brazil’s Talisson Glock, who took silver, while third-place went to Xu.

The Great Britain star had previously bagged a bronze medal at the championships in the SB7 100m breaststroke.

He added: “It was hard work but I’m really proud of a great result. It was just outside my personal best so it shows I was on good form.

“I will be having discussions with my coach Emma in the next few weeks - there has not been any firm confirmation of the Europeans yet “The next World Championships will be taking place in Glasgow in July 2015.

“I will definitely be swimming at the end of this year in meetings in Sheffield and Swansea.”

Sascha’s coach Emma Patrick, from Herefordshire, said she was proud of her charge.

“Sascha was just .32 of a second off the time he did in London and, at this moment, he’s in a good position,” said Emma.

“Some people might feel that it’s a good time for a sportsman to bow out - being a world champion and at the top of their sport.

“But Sascha is very competitive and his times are always consistent.

“There are things we can still improve on and, perhaps, we could look at an additional event for Sascha to compete in.”
